    ULIP is unit linked insurance plan. Means , part of your money will be invested in shares like a mutual fund and the other part will be in Govt.Bonds
    In ordinary mutual funds you do not have insurance. ULIP is better

    ULIP is certainly less risky. But I use to like MF. Nowadays I go with muni bonds or something conservative.
