I’m trying to set up a recurring transfer twice a month to buy shares of mutual funds. My question is what day of the month is the best to buy shares? The 1st, 15th 31th etc? What day will I be more likely to buy cheaper or lower shares?

Okay, I’m new to investing in funds.

I know a bit here or there, but I’m still learning. I don’t know enough to trust myself jumping into anything yet.

What I’m looking for is long-term stuff, like something for retirement. I’m 22 now so I guess it’s a great time to start.

What is the top parameters I should look for when browsing mutual funds? Like when browsing MorningStar I see NAV and Expense Ratios (I know what they are) but how do I know what is more important? Also, once I know what is important, how do I know if it’s good. I figured you probably want a low expense ratio, but what would you consider “low”?

I guess I just wanna know what to look for in numbers.

One other question. Mutual funds are made up of several stocks now do these stocks ever change or are they always the same stocks?

Is the “buy and hold” theory of owning mutual funds for retirement savings now defunct?

billbahai asked:

The “buy and hold” folks have for many years said that the stock market averages a 7% return annually, and to keep investing in a diversified portfolio of mutual funds representing stocks and some bonds. But many investors following this strategy lost 30 - 45% of their retirement portfolio value in the last six months as the recession pummeled both stock and bond values.

Should US investors be looking somewhere other than mutual funds to grow their retirement savings?
